Who Might Find This Web Site Useful Coal Black Voices and its web-based study guide will be uniquely useful as it addresses the common experiences and relationships of African Americans, Black Appalachians and White Appalachians; two of the key demographic groups of south west Ohio. The study guide will provide an opportunity for students, teachers, activists, librarians, adult learners, policy-makers, artists and communicators to deepen their understanding of the African-American experience through the poetry and language of the Affrilachian Poets. The study guide will create pathways of thinking and exploration based on the extensive research, interviews and background work prepared for the documentary in areas such as: African American history and culture, Appalachian history and culture, American popular culture, Pan African cultures, poetry, film, language, music, African American literature and spirituality. Coal Black Voices is an attempt to create space for a different kind of conversation about life in America from an African-American and poet's perspective. Poetry and art often are able to communicate ideas and points of view that can't be communicated through polarizing debate, panels or news interviews. Teachers, community activists and leaders have been excited about using the documentary as an organizing principle for gathering people to explore timely issues of Black identity and contemporary expressions of the African Diaspora, Appalachian cultural identity, racism, and the role of literature, poetry and art in these times of unrest and uncertainty.
